What Does a Production Designer Do? A Crash Course with Examples

Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” biopic benefits from the elaborate period world-building of go-to production designer Arthur Max (a four-time Oscar nominee). It’s about the rapid rise to power of Napoleon Bonaparte (Phoenix) from military leader to Emperor and his obsession with Empress Joséphine (Vanessa Kirby). Max and his team recreate six major battles (including Austerlitz with horses falling through the ice and, of course, Waterloo), each with its own distinctive geometric patterns. It’s Max’s favorite architectural period, which covers the opulence of palaces to the real misery of hovels, along with a few burning buildings, at sea with ships, and the massive military engagements.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), is a British organisation that hosts annual awards shows for film, television, children's film and television, and interactive media. Since 1964, selected production designers (or art directors or set decorators) have been awarded with the BAFTA award for Best Production Design at an annual ceremony. Production design is everything that goes into making the world of a film – sets, props and more. But despite its importance, production design is a facet of filmmaking that I think many people take for granted. We often ascribe credit to the writers, directors and stars of a picture rather than the artists working in the shadows. But today, we’re going to honor the great production designers of Hollywood by looking at every Academy Award for Best Production Design winner – then we’ll rank some of the best production designs of all-time.

Uncomfortable and anxious, it’s not easy to relax while watching this artistic film. At the time, CGI was a dream away, so all special effects had to be done practically. For a movie lacking the budget of a major motion picture (at least the first one), stop-motion was essential for major explosions and action sequences. Similar to above, Hollywood has always had a fascination with space and the blank page of production design available to that vision.

We’ve already evaluated Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects, and here we’ll take a look at Production Design. Learning how to make a brand mood board can seem intimidating at first but when done right, it can become a potent tool for crafting an effective brand identity. The set must establish the location and the era, adding to the mood and feel of the narrative.

The numbers paint a bleak picture of the world wine industry in 2023. The exceptions are China, where wine consumption dropped by a quarter, and Romania, where it increased by one-fifth. It is worth noting that these changes mean that the USA has significantly narrowed the gap to “the big three” (France, Italy, and Spain).

The Grand Budapest Hotel is one of the most visually splendorous films of the 21st century – so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Adam Stockhausen and Anna Pinnock were honored by the Academy for their work on the film’s production design. If you want to build beautifully expressive and colorful film sets like those in The Grand Budapest Hotel, check out our video below. You have to give credit where credit is due – I don’t love Titanic, but I can appreciate the film’s production design. According to production designer Peter Lamont, the team used archival photographs and blueprints to match the ship’s interiors to the original.

“Denis’s approach is always to have sets that are as immersive as possible,” Vermette told AD back in October. Most of the action takes place on planet Arrakis, where the sets consisted of large, partially underground palaces made of thick stone. Light wells are more prevalent than windows, and the buildings are quite angular to allow the 750-kilometer-per-hour sandstorms to roll right off of them. The result is striking, and calls to mind WW II bunkers, Mesopotamian ziggurats, Egyptian and Aztec pyramids, brutalist architecture, and even the Italian 1960s and ’70s design collective Superstudio. As twisted as Poor Things is, there’s something that leaves your jaw on the floor regarding its imagination and scope of brilliance. I’d argue that the film’s production is one of the key reasons why.

A production designer’s job is to make sure the set matches the characters and the tone of the project. Creating the worlds that leave us breathless is an all-encompassing task. Let’s look at what a production designer does during production and how every filmmaker can use their knowledge and skills to create a better film. Leading this year’s production design hopefuls in terms of total career nominations are “Barbie” duo Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer, who earned joint recognition for half a dozen earlier films. Excluding “Sherlock Holmes,” six of their bids were coupled with ones for Best Costume Design, all of which were bestowed upon Jacqueline Durran, who prevailed in 2013. Those two also worked on “Oppenheimer,” which is set in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s.

The films below are listed with their production year (for example, the 2000 Academy Award for Best Art Direction is given to a film from 1999). In the lists below, the winner of the award for each year is shown first, followed by the other nominees in alphabetical order. If you don't want the pressure of deciding on a layout, the brand offers a convenient Make My Book option, in which Shutterfly's professional designers curate your photos and design the book for free. Plus, you'll still have the opportunity to put finishing touches on it before it gets printed.

Guillermo Del Toro doesn’t make movies with bad production design – it’s just not part of his M.O. His collaborators on Pan’s Labyrinth included art director Eugenio Caballero who has worked on other acclaimed projects like Roma and Pilar Revuelta who received acclaim for her work on Pedro Almodóvar’sBad Education. "It really depends upon the service and your preference," Rothman says. Although some online custom photo book makers also have an app, it can have limited functionality, be buggy or not as easy to use as the desktop equivalent.

Well, there are three sci-fi movies that have won in the last 10 years and four period movies (three dramas and one comedy). Using the clues that Herbert provided (devastatingly hot temperatures, extreme winds that whip sand around the landscape, and of course, the worms), Vermette pieced together what a palace on Arrakis might look like. Done entirely in black and white, the minimalism of Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of MacBeth allows the source text to do all the talking. Production designer Stefan Dechant brilliantly selected simple elements—a door handle that looks like a dagger when lit properly, for instance—to create a spare yet evocative environment. Nominations voting is from January 11–16, 2024, with official Oscar nominations announced on January 23, 2024.
